“On the surface, the story Sheesham and Lotus is that of Old-time music obsession.. Underneath this veil lies an unfinished tale of true-life struggle, serendipity, indelible friendship and virtuosic association.”

-Candace Shaw, author of
“ Sheesham and Lotus, the Artists in Portrait”

Opening up a can of "tasty tunes" at the Cameron House in Toronto.

Not much is known about the two they call Sheesham and Lotus. These two men; or as some describe, apparitions, at once are a flowing part of a musical whole that envelopes them when they perform. Where song, sound, and human presence become one all-encompassing, sensuous experience.

“…Sheesham and Lotus are the Kings of Old-time!”
-Carrie Ough, The Good Lovelies

Sheesham and Lotus perform concerts, workshops and lectures in the Old-Time Arts at folk camps, festivals, schools, universities and colleges across North America. Flatfoot buck-dance, jaw-harp, harmonica duets, fiddle and banjo, hambone hand-jive, crooked fiddle tunes, fretless and gourd banjos. Minstrel tunes, spoons and bones.

“Totally completely authentic! And thanks for signing my CD!”
-David Clayton-Thomas

Here's the boys playing the market in Kingston Ontario.

A major moment of reckoning between Sheesham and Lotus was the moment in time when they realized that they shared the experience as children of brushing their teeth to the fiddle tune “Turkey in the Straw” using the shape of their mouth to manipulate the melody of the tune. This kind of idle yet innate musical activity seemed to follow both of them in their everyday lives as youngsters.

“…’Sheesham and Lotus Everytime’ is the best Old-time record of this year!”
-Matt Large

When our fair duo performs, one wonders if the music flows in their very blood. Lotus Wight fervently insists that his heritage of Creole and French roots informs his musical stylings. Other sources report Indonesian-Dutch heritage. Sheesham Crowe grew up in the fresh-water haven of Manitoulin Island, winning fiddle contests and bonspiels as a young child before giving up fiddle to study dance. Crowe would leave the fiddle behind and pick up where he left off in his mid twenties after becoming an accomplished percussionist and instrument-builder. Sheesham is one-sixteenth Indian.

“Come highstepping with Sheesham and Lotus!. Old-time rhythms that will blow the mind and hypnotize! ”
-Chris Coole
